Scoring — Riftbound Rules

Section 445 — 18 rules

446.
A player Scores in one of two ways:
446.1.
Conquer: A player gains Control of a Battlefield they did not yet Score this turn.
446.1.a.
In Modes of Play with teammates, Battlefields under the Control of a teammate during the Beginning Phase are also disqualified from being Scored through Conquer by any means.
446.1.b.
A player will gain control of a Battlefield after establishing Control by applying Contested first.
446.2.
Hold: A player maintains Control of a Battlefield during their Beginning Phase.
447.
A player may only Score, from either method, once per Battlefield per turn.
448.
When a player Scores, two things occur:
448.1.
The player earns up to one Point, depending on their current score.
448.1.a.
The Final Point has additional restrictions.
448.1.a.1.
Notably, points earned from sources that are not Conquer or Hold are not beholden to these restrictions.
448.1.b.
When a player tries to earn a Point through a Score, and their current Point Total is 1 point from the Victory Score of the Mode of Play, the following occurs:
448.1.b.1.
If the player has Scored through Hold, that player scores the Final Point.
448.1.b.2.
If the player has Scored through a Conquer and has Scored every Battlefield through either method this turn, that player scores the Final Point. If the player has Scored through a Conquer and has not Scored every Battlefield this turn, that player draws a card.
448.2.
Trigger Score abilities at the Battlefield that Scored.
448.2.a.
Conquer abilities trigger at a Battlefield that was Conquered.
448.2.b.
Hold abilities trigger at a Battlefield that was Held.
448.2.c.
These will only trigger when the Battlefield is Scored; I.E. These cannot be triggered more than once per turn for a player.
449.
When a player accrues Points equal to the Victory Score for their Mode of Play, they Win the Game immediately.

How do I score? How are conquer and hold different?

When you take control of a battlefield you didn't already control and which you haven't scored yet this turn, you score 1 point. This is called conquering. If you control a battlefield at the start of your turn, you score 1 point. This is called holding.

How does the last point work?

In order to win the game, you need to score the last point (the 8th point in most games, 11th in 2v2). If you try to score the last point by conquering, you will only get the last point if you have already scored all of the other battlefields this turn. Otherwise, you'll draw a card instead. So, in an 8 point 1v1 game with two battlefields: ● If you are at 6 points and conquer both battlefields, you'll go to 7 and then to 8 and win. ● If you are at 7 points and conquer both battlefields, you'll draw a card for the first one, and then go to 8 and win. ● If you are at 6 points, hold one battlefield to 7, and conquer the other to go to 8 and win. ● If you are at 7 points, you can hold one to go to 8 and win. In an 8 point 4 player Free-for-All game with three battlefields: ● If you are at 5 points and conquer all 3 battlefields, you'll go to 6 then 7 then 8 and win. ● If you are at 6 points and conquer all 3 battlefields, you'll go to 7 then draw 1, then 8 and win. ● If you are at 5 points, hold 1 battlefield to 6, then conquer the other two, you'll go to 7 and then 8 and win.
