What happens when you play Abandon on a spell that was played for its Flow cost?

It will be banished when it attempts to leave the chain. Flow's "then banish it" means that if the spell would leave the chain after becoming a finalized chain item, and leaving wasn't instructed by its own execution, it is banished instead. Abandon returns the countered card toward hand, but that is still leaving the chain, so the Flow spell is banished. The same applies to effects like Kai'Sa, Evolutionary and Fizz, Trickster.

Can my opponent play Abandon on my spell while I control an empowered Mel, Newly Awakened? What happens?

They can play it, but on resolution they Predict and nothing else happens. Mel says your spells and abilities can't be countered, so Abandon's counter fails; the event of the spell going to the Trash never occurs, so Abandon's replacement (return it to hand) has nothing to replace. The replacement only functions during Abandon's resolution, so when the spell resolves later it goes to the Trash as normal.
